Server: More Than a Moniker
True servers are designed from the floor up with performance and maximum up-time in mind. Taking into consideration that time is money, just as it pays in spades to have a good business plan, having a good plan to protect important business data means that the business can spend less time on IT and more time doing what it does best.
Desktop PC VS Server
Business Data should be protected, secured, and backed up while living on a substrate that will readily deliver that data at a respectable speed. A desktop computer does none of these things well because they are simply not designed to do so. The starkest difference between a Server and a Desktop Computer running a Server Role is in the hardware.
- Server motherboards typically support multiple processors.
- Server motherboards support Error Correcting Memory, resulting in a more stable system.
- Desktop computers do not support Error Correcting Memory resulting in potential downtime from BlueScreen/Memory Errors.
- Server motherboards typically have multiple network adapters meaning failure of one component does not impact server access.
- Desktop computers typically have one Ethernet connection. This means if the network adapter fails, the “server” is inaccessible.
- This means failure of a Power Supply does not impact server operation. Server chassis’ support Dual/Redundant/Hot Swap Power Supplies.
- Desktop computers have one power supply. If the PSU fails, the “server” is inoperable.
- Servers have a Redundant Array of Independent Drives and Hot Swap Hard Drives. This means if one (or more) Hard Disks fail, the server continues to be operable.
- Desktop computers typically have one hard drive. This means when that Hard Drive fails, the “server” is inoperable.
- Servers have 24/7 support and Next Business Day on-site service from the manufacturer. This means when an unrecoverable hardware failure does occur, recovery efforts are fast.
- Desktop computers typically come with consumer grade post-sales support, which is often severely lacking when you are faced with a critical system outage and your ability to conduct business is negatively impacted.
